NEW FORMAT THIS YEAR!!!!!
The S.H.A.R.E. Spelling Bee will be held on
♦Monday, January 13, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. - 3 p.m.
In order to keep families from having to wait while the words are being checked to determine a winner, the Bee Coordinator will take the lists home and assess them.
The Awards Ceremony will be held on
♦Saturday, January 18, 2014 from 10:00 am - 11:30 am.
This will be a short presentation with light refreshments. If you are unable to attend the Awards Ceremony, results will be sent out in an email.
This bee is open to any homeschooler in the St. Louis area. It is for homeschooled children in grades K-8. We have changed the format of the bee last year due to lack of availability of volunteers in the past. There is a great deal of work that needs to be done and your participation as parents of the spelling bee participants is crucial to the success of this event. Please carefully read the directions below.
The S.H.A.R.E. Spelling Bee will be conducted as a WRITTEN test with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each grade level. The over-all high scorer will then advance to the St. Louis Post Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee and then, hopefully, to the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee.
Who: Homeschooled students in Grades K-8…you do not have to be SHARE member to participate.
Where: St. Andrew Catholic Church (former school building), 309 Hoffmeister, St. Louis, MO 63125

How to sign up for this event:
1. Scroll down to the bottom of this popout and click on "Click here to sign up".
*There is often a question as to which grade level a homeschooled child should be entered in the spelling bee. If your child is studying spelling at grade level or if your student is studying spelling above grade level in your home school, we recommend that you enter your child into the grade level that his/her age determines. For example, your child’s age and birth date determine that your child would be enrolled in 2nd grade in a traditional school setting. However, in your home school your child is doing 3rd or 4th grade spelling, then we recommend, when you sign your child up for the SHARE Spelling Bee, that you sign him/her up for the 2nd grade spelling group. If you have any questions regarding this, then feel free to ask. It is better to ask before the Spelling Bee rather than after the Bee when all the awards have been given out.
2. Send a check (made payable to SHARE) for $4 per child entering in the bee to:
Cathy Mullins
3675 Montana
St. Louis, MO 63116
Your child will not be officially entered in the bee until the money is received. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING THE BEE IS: DECEMBER 15, 2013.
* Please note that students may participate in only one official home school spelling bee for the 2013-2014 school years to be eligible for the Post-Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee.
*Due to changes in the Scripps National Spelling Bee rules, the S.H.A.R.E. Spelling Bee is permitted to advance only ONE student to the St. Louis Post Dispatch Spelling Bee. The 14 eligible counties are: Missouri: Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Charles, St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Warren, Washington. Illinois: Clinton, Franklin, Jersey, Madison, Monroe County, St. Clair. According to the Post Dispatch and Scripps, you must be a permanent resident/homeschooler of these 14 counties during the 2013-2014 school years. Residency will be verified. We encourage all homeschoolers from other counties who wish to advance past the local level to consider entering an official spelling bee in their area. If you are unable find one and are not interested in advancing to the next level, you are welcome to enter the S.H.A.R.E. Spelling Bee.
