Additional Information

Hi Everyone!

Hope you can attend at least one of the three exciting Powell Hall Educational Concerts this year! See in purple below. The first concert – “Hoot and Howl at Powell” - is coming up soon on October 28! The new Educational Director once again has some creative ideas to complement the St. Louis Symphony music. She says, “We want students to have a wonderful multi-sensory concert experience!” SHARE has reserved a block of great seats in the Grand Tier Box section.

Please note - the St. Louis Symphony has decided to use the name “Young People’s Concerts” for ALL Educational Concerts – like they used to do 50 years ago! There are no “Kinder Konzerts” or “Young Adult Concerts.” There are sometimes recommended age guidelines, but the concerts are all the same.

The 2015-2016 Young People’s Concerts that SHARE will attend as a group are:

“Hoot and Howl at Powell,” Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at 11:00 am

Presented in partnership with the St. Louis Zoo

A spooktacular concert with help from special guest, Luna the Bat. Luna will take you on a musical tour of all the wickedly wonderful animals that relish the night. Featuring Night on Bald Mountain from Fantasia and John Williams' Hedwig's Theme from the popular Harry Potter films.

“Beethoven’s New Groove,” Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at 11:00 am

Stomp, clap, clap, stomp! Learn about the beats in music and how different rhythms create different musical styles. Hear your classical favorites, including Tchaikovsky's Waltz fromSleeping Beauty, Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King and selections from Beethoven's Fifth and Ninth symphonies.

“Tales of Shakespeare,” Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at 11:00 am

Take a journey through the eyes of a few of Shakespeare's most adventurous characters, featuring performers from Shakespeare Festival St. Louis. Magic and mischief will follow as his exciting stories unfold before your eyes and ears. Through music and storytelling, students will connect some of Shakespeare's most popular plays in an immersive, theatrical celebration! Featuring Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream and more!

POWELL HALL EDUCATIONALCONCERT IMPORTANT INFORMATION

> St. Louis Symphony Powell Hall Educational Concerts have been going on for many years in the St. Louis area (The first Young People's Concert was in 1921!) and are open to all students ...including homeschoolers. SHARE attends select Young People's Concerts as a group and has awesome seats in the Dress Circle Box and Grand Tier sections.

> Remember, even though the Teacher's Guide's and website give age recommendations they are only loose guidelines. All ages can and do attend. The Young People’s Concerts are geared for about K-8the grade, but high school students often come with their younger siblings.

> If the date or time that SHARE is going does not work for your family, you can make a reservation as your own “school” for a different concert and purchase tickets directly from the Powell Box Office for the same $5 price. Call 314-286-4156 or email [email protected] to reserve tickets. Go to www.slso.org and click on “Community and Education” for a complete schedule of Educational Concerts.

> To sign up for one of the Young People’s Concerts go to the Public Page of the SHARE website at www.sharehomeschool.com  and click on the “Calendar” link on the top bar. When the Calendar appears, click on the date/concert you want. A pop-up window will appear on the left side of your screen. Fill out the required information and your name will be added to the sign-up list. SHARE pays for your spot once your name is on the list.

> Cost of the Educational Concerts is $5.00 per person. Both adults and students have to pay but lapsitters are free. Send a check made payable to SHARE to: Kerrie Tate, 617 Bacon Ave., St. Louis MO 63119 for one or more of the concerts. Please note the specific concerts in the check memo.  If you are using Paypal you must pay for each concert individually. Remember to send your payment BEFORE concert day - Powell Hall does not like us to collect money in the lobby on the day of the concerts.

> There are NO individual tickets for the Educational Concerts. We have one master ticket for all of us and we are seated together as a group. Concerts are about 45-50 minutes in length. .

> Powell Symphony Hall is in the Grand Center District, located one block north of The Fox Theatre, AT 718 N. Grand, 63101. It is on the corner of Delmar and Grand. Parking costs $1 - $5 in the lots around Powell Hall on student concert days. Sometimes you can find spots on the street, but remember to put change in the meter. For more detailed directions, go to www.slso.org and click on “Plan Your Visit,” then scroll down to ”Parking &  Directions.” Note: The Grand Boulevard Bridge is now open!

> Meet in the lobby of Powell Hall by 10:30 am. Seating begins PROMPTLY at 10:30 am, even though the concert doesn't start until 11:00 am. Allow yourself enough time to park and walk to Powell Hall. Look for Cathy and Jesse Mullins (in his wheelchair) and/or Kerrie at the front of the SHARE line that forms against the wall. We will have a clipboard that says “SHARE.” If you are late and we've already been seated, tell the ushers you are with the SHARE homeschool group in Grand Tier or Dress Circle Box. If you don’t see Kerrie seating people, wait for the ushers to seat you in the next available spots.

> The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra Education Director puts together wonderful Teacher’s Materials for each Educational Concert.  It is very helpful to look them over before attending a concert. To view and download the Teacher’s Materials go to the Young People’s Concert page at www.slso.org  and click on the "Teacher's Materials" links on the right sidebar..

> There is no specific dress code at Powell Hall (The regular St. Louis Symphony evening events are usually very dressy), but it’s a good idea for the kids to look better than when they are just playing in the backyard.

> Babies, toddlers and preschoolers ARE allowed to attend the Educational Concerts, but will be asked to leave by an usher if they are disruptive. No running, roughhousing, food, drinks, or strollers allowed. A lot of parents bring small QUIET toys, crayons & notepads, etc. to keep younger ones occupied as they're waiting or listening to the concert.

> You CAN drop off your child to attend the concert with the SHARE group. Let us know if you are planning to do this, and we'll send all the details of how to drop off and pick up.

> If something happens on the morning of the concert and you have to cancel, PLEASE call or text Kerrie Tate's cell phone at 314-791-0000 ASAP. If you call early enough, we can fill your seats and you can get your money back or credit it towards another SHARE event.

> Let us know ahead of time if you need any type of ”special needs" seating or assistance.

> AS WITH EVERY SHARE EVENT, BE SURE AND CHECK YOUR EMAIL FREQUENTLY FOR ANY LAST MINUTE CHANGES OR UPDATES
