Date
August 14-23, 2012
Location
Kennedy Recreation Center
6050 Wells Road
St. Louis, MO 63128 US
Additional Information
The 34th Annual YMCA Book Fair will be next month and I need you all to think about how you can volunteer and earn some money for SHARE and log some great community service hours at the same time. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year—last year the YMCA Book Fair gave us $1,750.00 for our work—this is how we keep our membership price (and prices of other events) so low. Please, please, please consider picking a day (or days!!!) when you can help.
They love having homeschoolers volunteer because they are so well-behaved, respectful, and work hard! Debbie Redmond wrote the following last year…….
Hi Cathy,
The YMCA Book Fair Finance Committee has made their recommendations for payment to the groups that helped this year for the Book Fair. They were impressed with the number of people that helped this year, the amount of adults that were present and the work that was done. As a result, the committee has recommended that your group receive $1,750 for their time.
Debbie writes the following now......
Hi Cathy,
It probably would be a good idea to get people to start thinking in terms of helping. I need the big boys and men on Tuesday, August 14th about 9:00 a.m. to help with the tables—450 of them!. Once they are set up, then we will need help placing the signs. Hopefully, they will start unloading trucks around 1:00or so in the afternoon and will go until 9 p.m. August 15th we will finish unloading trucks then start moving and opening boxes so that would also be a good day to have the "strong" ones help us. After about 1 in the afternoon, the others can come in and help with the boxes. We usually need help unpacking and organizing the books from then on. Opening night is Friday, August 17th. If some of them would like to help........we need parking lot attendants for both Friday from about 3:00 to 10 p.m. as well as all day Saturday, 9 to 9. Just give me an estimate when you think you will have someone there to help us. If anyone is available on August 23rd, that is when we pack up the remaining books and reload them on the trucks. You can tell them that I will make sure the kids are hydrated and fed during the times they are helping us. Just let me know the names and the times they will be coming. Thanks ever so much, Debbie

So…………………below is an outline of the dates and type of jobs available. Please, please consider giving a few hours of your time. Then you just have to make sure to sign the Volunteer Book so that SHARE gets the credit. The last three years Jesse and I came and were able to carry boxes on his wheelchair tray to the correct tables. So if Jesse can be a helper, I know that there is a job for anyone!!!!! SO PLEASE CHECK YOUR CALENDARS AND LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU THINK YOU WILL BE ABLE TO HELP. IF YOU HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR DAY AT THE LAST MINUTE, NO PROBLEM. THE IMPORTANT PART IS THAT YOU COME AT SOME POINT, WORK HARD, AND DON’T FORGET TO LOG YOUR HOURS FOR S.H.A.R.E. IN THEIR VOLUNTEER BOOK!!!
My hope is that many of you strong boys and men will be able to come on Tuesday, August 14, in order to help set up the tables. I am looking for another crew to join Jesse & me on Wednesday, August 15th from 9am to 5pm in order to unload the boxes out of the trailers and deliver them to the tables. Once that is done, the job of taking the books out of the boxes and putting them on the tables is a much lighter job. The Y will feed you well. In the past they have a room with sub sandwiches, fruit, chips, cookies, soda & water. I know they will again. By the way, the Kennedy Recreation Center is air-conditioned!!!!
This all takes place at the Kennedy Recreation Center, 6050 Wells Road. 63128. If you cannot work August 14 or 15, your help is needed and appreciated any day. If you can volunteer more than once, that is really wonderful! They add up all of our hours to determine how much money we deserve, so the more hours we have, the better. But I promised Debbie Redmond I would do my best to have an awesome crew the first two days of preparation—she is always most worried about that. Also, I would be happy to write a letter of recommendation about your community service if anyone needs it—that looks great on a college resume!!!!
Thank you soooooooooo much and I hope to hear from an army of you soon!!! Just send me your name (or students’ names) and when you will be there. Let’s show the power of homeschoolers!!!!! If you are unable to give above the $15 SHARE membership fee, and are unable to ever stay and clean up at events, or plan field trips or do other things for our support group, this is a chance for you to give back to SHARE and....it's a win-win-win situation--not only does SHARE benefit, but the YMCA is blessed and you are giving your children the opportunity to reach out to others and serve their community-- plus it's kind of fun! What a deal! And what better event for homeschoolers to be associated with than a book fair!!!!!
Thanks again and Blessings,
Cathy
